Day

It is ‘touch down’ at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Representatives of Twiga Tours, your hosts in Kenya eagerly await your arrival in traditional African style - wet towels and bubbly. It is a tradition in Africa to present a gift as an expression of our joy and happiness - what better gift than an authentic safari hat and other safari souvenirs! Thereafter transfer to your city hotel for overnight at the hotel.

  • Stay at Sarova Stanley Hotel

After a sumptuous breakfast, you depart on a pleasant drive to the floor of the Great Rift Valley with its spectacular views of the valley below. Continue to Lake Nakuru National Park, the lake is situated in the heart of the Rift Valley and is one of Kenya's most famous soda lakes. The National Park, is famous as the home to thousands of lesser and greater flamingo that form a pink hue over the 62km shallow alkaline Lake. This park also provides sanctuary for Rothschild giraffe, black and white rhino and the elusive leopard. Over 50 other animal species freely roam the park including waterbucks, impalas, Cape buffalo, wart hogs among many others. The scenery is breath-taking; a haven, rejuvenating the soul with the largest Euphorbia forest in Africa, great observation points including the lion hill, the honeymoon ranges and the Bahati hills. Arrive in time for lunch at your preferred choice of accommodation and some leisure time, later in the afternoon head out for a game viewing drive in search of both the black and white rhino, the endangered Rothschild Giraffe (Twiga), the elusive leopard as well as a host of other plains game and with a chance to visit the shores of the lake. You start the day venturing through the Great Rift Valley travelling to the northern most extension of the Serengeti Plains and one of the richest wildlife Game Reserves, the Masai Mara. It is perhaps the only region left in Kenya where the visitor may see animals in the same super-abundance as existed a century ago. Arrive for lunch at your lodge/camp. After lunch and a brief “siesta”, you depart for an afternoon game viewing drive in this vast and expansive Reserve teaming with game. Be on the look-out for the 'big five' Mara is famous for and the most sought after in the early 20th century when Kenya was a hunters' paradise. The “big five’ include the lion, Cape buffalo, the Savannah elephant, black rhino and the elusive leopard. The vast savannah grasslands are as far as the eye can see and is home to the awesome black-manned lion, the elusive leopard, cheetah, the Maasai giraffes, vast herds of elephants, rhino, thundering herds of zebra, migrating wildebeest, impalas, wart hogs, Thomspon and Grand gazelles, topis, waterbucks and numerous other plains game. You return late in the evening to freshen up prior to dinner and overnight at the lodge/camp.

  • stay at Tipilikwani Luxury Tented Camp

Amka! Awake early to enjoy a sumptuous breakfast before heading south towards Isebania and Sirari, the border towns of Kenya and Tanzania. You will continue with your journey passing the Mara River as it drains into Lake Victoria and stop at a private scenic site to enjoy picnic lunch. Covering an area of 14,763 square kilometres, the world famous Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's oldest park, and one of the world's last great wildlife refuges. It stretches as far as Lake Victoria to the West. Its name comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning 'endless plains'. The park's vegetation ranges from the short and long grass plains in the south, to the acacia savannah in the centre and wooded grasslands concentrated around the tributaries of the Grumenti and the Mara rivers in the park. The western corridor is a region of wooded highland and extensive plains reaching the edge of Lake Victoria. In the early morning and evening light, the Serengeti landscape is stunningly beautiful. The Serengeti ecosystem supports the greatest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa, including more than three million large mammals. It is the sanctuary of an estimated four million different animals and birds. The wildlife that roams the vast park include lions (the adult males of Serengeti have characteristic black manes), cheetahs, hunting dogs, savannah elephant, Cape buffalo, topis, warthogs, hunting dogs and spotted hyena among others. Enjoy a game-viewing drive en-route to the lodge, to check-in in the early evening. Dinner and overnight at the Lodge.

*Optional: To break the long journey to Tanzania, you may opt to fly to either Migori and continue the rest of your journey by road OR enjoy a short road transfer across the Kenya | Tanzania border where you will board your onward flight directly to the heart of the Serengeti. The prices for the two domestic flights have been quoted separately, below the main safari quotation.
*Recommended for Private Departures ONLY.

  • stay at Serengeti Sopa Lodge

Enjoy a full day in the Serengeti with game-viewing drives. Hundreds of predators roam the vast savannah plains. We have a high density of cheetahs in the south. Serengeti is also home to hundreds of bird species; among them the out-sized ostrich and bizarre secretary bird, the black eagles that soar effortlessly above the Lobo Hills. All meals and overnight at your proffered choice of accommodation.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY: Dawn Balloon Safari over the Serengeti Plains ending with breakfast.

  • stay at Serengeti Sopa Lodge

After breakfast, depart for the Oldupai Gorge where hominid footprints believed to be 3.6million years old were found. We will enjoy an on-site talk on the interpretation of the gorge by the resident guide. Proceed towards the rim of the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater stopping occasionally to admire the breath-taking vista unfolding before you. Arrive for check in, thereafter lunch. This afternoon just relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the crater, the largest unbroken caldera in the world. It has been described as one of the great natural wonders of the world. Eight million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater was an active volcano but its cone collapsed, forming the crater that is 610 meters deep, 20 kilometres in diameter, and covers an area of 311 sq. km. Spectacular as it is, the crater accounts for just a tenth of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater is home to many species of wild game and birds. With the exception of impala and topi (due to fierce competition with the wildebeest) and the giraffe (because there is not much to eat at tree level), almost every species of African plains mammal lives in the crater, including the endangered black rhino, and the densest population of predators in Africa. A strange thing is that the crater elephants are mainly bulls! The birdlife, which includes the flamingo, is mainly seasonal, and is also affected by the ratio of soda to fresh water in Lake Magadi on the crater. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

  • stay at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

After breakfast descend some 600 metres into the crater, which is home to an abundance of wildlife and a photogenic paradise, for a full day of game-viewing drive with picnic lunch at a private scenic site. Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact caldera in the world teams with an abundance of wildlife permanently resident on the crater floor. Prides of lions, herds of cape buffalo, impala, Thompson gazelles, rhino, giraffes, golden & black-backed jackal, zebra, cheetah, leopard and the spotted hyena. Unmatched for its natural variety & breath-taking beauty, there are few places on earth where such a tremendous diversity of landscapes exist inside a region this size. Apart from its wildlife riches, the crater is also of great archaeological importance, with the remains of some of mankind’s earliest ancestors discovered in the area, also a home to hundreds of bird species, refreshing in the small lakes in the crater floor. Return for dinner and overnight at your preferred choice of accommodation.

  • stay at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
